Gluten Free on the Go

So.. if you have been following my posts- you might know that I recently switched my diet for health reasons to no soy, no dairy, no red meat and no gluten! For anyone that knows me – the gluten and dairy game is the WORST! I am the biggest bread and cheese or pasta advocate ever born. But alas, my body doesn’t agree with my heart 😦

In addition to the recipes I am personally cultivating for a gluten free life (check them out!) I also use the following alternatives to supplement my daily gluten free game – check them out if you need assistance or motivation switching to Gluten Free!

Do you ever wish there was a simple way to remove stingy smells from your carpet that was safe for both your children playing on the floor and your pets?

Me too- which is why our family uses these DIY recipes for our carpet cleaning needs:

  1. We utilize Thieves Cleaner from Young Living in our Hoover Carpet Cleaner rather than the chemical based cleaners.
  2. After the thieves cleaner cleaned carpet dries- we use a DIY Carpet Freshener Powder.

Want the thieves cleaner? Here’s the recipe. See below for where you can get these ingredients too.

Transition to Organic

I have decided to write this post to keep track of my journey moving to organic foods and other healthier food options. You see, recently I was told to remove gluten, dairy, soy and red meat from my diet altogether for medical reasons. My first question was the same as everyone else’s- what’s left to eat?  Honestly- at first- I was stumped. When you work full time and have a 45 minute drive home, how do you keep food in the house, get to the grocery store, cook real food at home and make sure it fits within your diet?!  I was certain there was no possibility I could do this.

Luckily- as I started pushing through the inevitable challenges of change I came across a few tricks:

  • Meal Prepping – for example: I buy twice as much fish at a time, prep it, marinate it in a Ziplock back and freeze it. This way I have pre-prepped fish at anytime. You can see one of my recipes here: Lemon Honey Garlic Salmon.
  • Fresh fruits and Veggies – believe it or not, if you eat the right foods, you will honestly be ok eating less. The real nutrients in the real foods fill you up and keep you full much easier and much longer than processed items. Not too mention, they are way better for you than those genetically modified/chemical filled food items. yuck!

But again you ask- how do you get all of this done every night? The truth is – I’m not perfect, and I have become quite fond of the app – DoorDash to deliver food to my hosue from local restaurants on those nights that I just don’t want to cook. However, on the flip side- I found that by buying the right foods and keeping them in my house on the regular – Its really not too hard to keep things quick and healthy at home.

One of my favorite tricks is using “Farm Fresh” organic food delivery service. We have two alternating packages- one of veggies and fruits and the other of just organic fruits to snack on, I also have them deliver my cage free eggs.

Every 2 weeks a box is dropped off at my doorstep in the middle of the night so I have fresh produce available for in my fridge without ever having to go to the grocery store. Its amazing. If you are interested in trying – you can use this promo code:

Lemon Honey Garlic Salmon

1 teaspoon minced garlic

1 cluster of cilantro

1 lemon

1 lime

1 orange

Organic honey

Paprika

1 filet of salmon

*gluten, dairy, soy free*

Preheat oven to 400. Line a pan with tin foil. Mix the garlic, cilantro, lemon juice and lime juice in a bowl with a pinch or two of paprika. Cut the salmon filet into individual sized pieces and line the bottom of the tray with your salmon. I prefer wild caught salmon. Spoon the garlic cilantro mix onto the salmon filets and top off with a pinch of salt and pepper. Lay thinly sliced orange slices on top of the salmon and drizzle your honey over the top of everything. Wrap up the foil and bake for 20 minutes or until done.

Tip: for added benefits I use a drop or two of lemon and black pepper vitality essential oils. You can find more info here.

The “A” Word

Have you ever woken up to knots in your stomach, nausea and consistent worry about the day to come? I believe many of us have trekking through this crazy life experience this at least from time to time. In fact, studies have been done showing that most women experience some sort of emotional struggle at some point in their lives. By now you might know that the “A” word is anxiety. For me its always been there, and I grew to think the feeling was normal. All until one day when the unthinkable happened- unexpectedly a very close family member of mine passed away. My emotional health was catapulted into a downward spiral of hurt, pain, stress, and grief. I had a lot of work to do and a lot of healing to process to get back on track with who I knew I was supposed to be.

Did you know that when fragrances are inhaled- they travel to the olfactory membranes in the nose. When these membranes are stimulated by the right fragrance molecules the olfactory nerves in the brain begin receiving electrical pulses. The emotional control center of the brain is located near the olfactory nerves in the limbic system. The limbic system is responsible for controlling heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, stress, and even hormone balance. Because of this, the fragrances of essential oils can have a great effect and provide support for emotional health.

My friends, I am not a doctor, nor do I claim that essential oils provide any replacement for true medical care if needed. All I know is that over the years I have tried many things to help add a little extra support to my emotional health- nothing seemed to provide the extra support I needed on a day to day basis to until I found the power of inhaling/diffusing these little bottles of magic called Essential Oils.

There are many ways to utilize these oils to add support into your day. Diffusing essential oils is a perfect way to improve your home, work and living environments- heck, you can even use a USB diffuser from Young Living right in your car!! The only thing I did differently was add essential oils to my life- message me at happyoilerhaines@gmail.com for more information or comment below and I’ll be happy to help.

Ways of Using Essential Oils

There are many ways of using essential oils. Each of Young Living’s oils are labeled as either Topical/Aromatic. There is also an entire line of Young Living oils called Vitality that can be used as dietary or internally ingested! Here is some information on how you can start using your oils:

AROMATICALLY:

Diffusing oils can help purify the air and neutralize the air around you from mildew, smoke, and other odors. Diffusing can also help to protect you and your family from harmful things we breathe and help support mood regulation.

F091F35A-3DA5-49D4-9881-BE1A3EFA7C1C

To inhale essential oils, try these options:

  • Place 2-3 drops in your palm and rub you hands clockwise together- this helps activate the molecules! Cup your hands together over your nose and inhale deeply. Enjoy 🙂
  • Add several drops to a bowl of hot water (hot but no boiling please!). Inhale the vapors that rise from the bowl. For an added benefit, place a toll over your head to increase the intensity of the vapors!
  • Apply a few drops to a cotton ball, tissue, your scarf, your hairbrush, or wearable diffuser necklace and inhale periodically. Enjoy!
  • Diffuse your oils in a cold air diffuser. You can find the options for the Young Living Premium starter kit here!

TOPICALLY:

Direct application onto the skin is one of the easiest and most convenient ways to use essential oils. Topical use can be highly effective as the oils can easily pass through lipid membranes of cell walls penetrating cells and dispersing through the body in a matter of minutes! The best places to put them in my opinion? Definitely the neck, over the heart, and the bottom of the feet. The bottom of the feet are full of nerve endings and large pores allowing for faster absorption of the oils.

6A38D089-C0FD-4CE4-8799-592E806FCBB6

TIP: always test the oils on a small area of skin first. As the oils are so pure- they can have different effects on different skin sensitivity levels. Make sure you do what is right for you!

If you don’t want to use the pure oil topically- you can always use a carrier oil! Carrier oils extend oils when applied to a larger area and can also help decrease any skin irritation you may experience. Carrier oils should always be used for children. My favorite carrier oil is coconut oil and vitamin e oil. Other possibilities include grapes oil, sweet almond oil and even good ‘ole olive oil.

Morning Start: My Essentials

Good Morning!

Today I am working my 9-5 day job from our Austin, Texas office. There is nothing like learning how to continue your normal daily routine while on the road. From finding new places to eat, exploring a new town, room service, and still having to go into the office each day- business travel is certainly a world of its own.

As many of my closest friends and family know- I have anxiety issues. So how do you learn you overcome the anxiety and handle business travel like a lady boss?! Well- I am absolutely not a doctor- but I will tell you the little things that have worked for me.

  1. Confidence- you are where you are for a reason. and you are doing what you are doing for a reason. Find that reason and hang on to it with all your might.
  2. Comfort – if at the end of the day – you feel like a movie, room service and a bubble bath in your hotel- do it! pamper yourself if you need to- and don’t be afraid to enjoy it.
  3. Routine- establish small items in your daily routine when you are home that you can easily carry with you when you travel- this will help make the adjustment seem easy!

Here is one of my favorite routine moments for the morning:

FullSizeRender-1

Yup! That’s right a cup of coffee with a drop of cinnamon bark- LOVE IT! When I get that digestive support from the cinnamon I am a happy camper. However, essential oils can add support for emotional health as well – the smell reminds me of my routine at home- which makes the morning adjustment that much nicer.

What is your morning routine?
